Experienced Tax Professional

What qualifies an experienced tax professional? The short answer is knowledge and common sense.

CPA’s may have over 30 years of  professional tax experience.  However, they haven’t learned much from that experience.  In other words, they have not expanded their horizons.  Other tax professionals have outside business experience, but limited accounting knowledge.  Possessing common sense and a Gabelli Fordham MBA qualifies me as the best bet.

Furthermore, many have never picked up a book, since they passed the CPA or graduated college.  As a result they deliver shoddy work as well as inferior service

Tax efficiency is the best tax minimization strategy accompolished by doing the least amount of work. Primarily tax efficiency means adherring to the compliance standards necessary to reduce your tax bill.  Secondarily tax efficiency considers the economic tradeoffs to adhere to tax regulations.

There are some tax advisers who believe the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, should be called the “American Income Accountant Protection Security Act”.  Moreover, these advisers believe it is so complex that it will take years to master it.  Many believe it will keep tax advisers, busy for years.  More than ever quality tax return preparation is a necessity.

Do I Need CPA?
What does a CPA do?

CPAs keep and inspect financial records to ensure the information is accurate and complies with relevant laws and regulations. They organize and maintain financial records, examine financial statements for accuracy, prepare tax returns, provide tax and financial forecasts, and offer auditing and review services.

Since accountants gain a deep understanding of personal or business finances, they can often suggest ways to improve financial performance, set financial goals, and plan how to achieve them.

While some CPAs work internally for companies, many run their own businesses or work for public accounting firms. They offer services to individuals, businesses, and nonprofits. CPAs frequently handle and prepare financial documents that clients must legally disclose. These documents include tax forms, tax returns, and financial statements that corporations need to provide to potential investors.

Some CPAs focus on taxes, preparing individual, small business, and corporate income tax returns. They also help clients take full advantage of all potential tax benefits

Education

CPAs receive their licenses and regulation at the state or federal territory level. To become a CPA, candidates must meet several requirements. First, they need to pass the rigorous Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination (Uniform CPA Exam) administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Next, states require candidates to complete 150 semester hours of college coursework before sitting for this exam. Additionally, candidates must gain work experience under the supervision of a licensed CPA. Finally, they must obtain continuing education each year, covering both accounting and ethics.

Ehtical Standards

More than forty state boards now require CPA candidates to pass an ethics exam. Most states accept the AICPA’s self-study “Professional Ethics for CPAs” as a “fifth” exam, along with other approved exams. Additionally, in many states, the ethics requirement must cover information about the state’s specific laws and standards for professional practice.

Professional Services

Does it make sense for a CPA to go further and get an MBA?

Like everything else it depends what you do with it.  Today, the intersection of finance and taxation has never been more intertwined.  In other words, its complex.

Lucky for me, I have an MBA from a top school, the Fordham Gabelli School of Business.
